Kalaripayattu originated in ancient South India in the present day state of Kerala. Crafted in ancient South Indian drawing inspiration from the raw power and sinuous strength of the majestic animal forms – lion, tiger, elephant, wild boar, snake, and crocodile… Kalaripayattu laid down the combat code of the Cholas, the Cheras and the Pandyas. Shrouded in deep mystery and mists of secrecy Kalaripayattu was taught by the masters in total isolation, away from prying eyes.
It is basically a philosophical system aiming to nurture a precise way of ‘non-violent life’ far from any form of aggression and structured more towards introspective self-analysis and self-control. The final goal of a Kalari practitioner is not just to know exactly all the techniques of defense and offence, neither just to know the proper use of the various weapons. But after having mastered all of these, it is to consciously overcome and rationally tame the anger and any kind of impulsive and violent behaviour which can have extremely dangerous effects on oneself and others.
The philosophy of this martial art stretches the limits of the human body to degrees where non-ballistic weapons from wooden staff to spear, sword and shield become extensions of the body.
